Background of the Study
Community narratives play a vital role in shaping discourse practices among rural Yoruba speakers, serving as repositories of communal wisdom, traditions, and social norms. These narratives, often passed down orally through generations, provide a framework for understanding collective identity and social values (Oluwole, 2023). In rural settings, storytelling remains a primary means of communication, where the interplay between tradition and language influences everyday discourse. Community narratives imbue conversations with cultural references, proverbs, and allegorical expressions that resonate deeply with local audiences (Adeyemi, 2024). As globalization and urbanization encroach upon rural life, these traditional narratives offer a counterbalance by preserving indigenous linguistic patterns and reinforcing communal bonds. The study examines how community narratives shape discourse practices among Yoruba rural speakers, emphasizing the preservation of cultural identity and the negotiation of modern influences. This investigation not only highlights the enduring power of oral tradition but also its adaptive capacity in evolving communicative contexts (Oluwole, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although community narratives are recognized for their cultural importance, there is insufficient research on how they specifically influence discourse practices among rural Yoruba speakers. The absence of detailed analyses regarding the integration of traditional narratives in everyday communication poses a challenge for understanding the preservation of cultural identity in rural communities (Babatunde, 2024). Additionally, the tension between traditional narrative forms and emerging modern communication styles is not well documented. This study aims to address these gaps by critically investigating the impact of community narratives on the structure and content of discourse among rural Yoruba speakers.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the role of community narratives in shaping discourse practices.

  2. To analyze the integration of traditional expressions in everyday communication.

  3. To assess the impact of modern influences on these narrative practices.

Research Questions

  1. How do community narratives influence everyday discourse among rural Yoruba speakers?

  2. What traditional expressions are commonly integrated into their conversations?

  3. How are modern communication styles negotiated within these narratives?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of community narratives in maintaining cultural identity and cohesion among rural Yoruba speakers. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and inform cultural preservation initiatives. By examining how traditional narratives are interwoven with modern discourse practices, the research offers valuable recommendations for educators, cultural practitioners, and policymakers (Oluwole, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the impact of community narratives on discourse practices among rural Yoruba speakers and does not extend to urban populations or other ethnic groups.

Definitions of Terms

  • Community Narratives: Traditional stories and accounts that reflect communal values and histories.

  • Discourse Practices: The habitual ways of structuring communication.

  • Rural Yoruba Speakers: Members of the Yoruba community residing in rural areas.
